Background Check Process

Volunteers may not begin until they have been cleared. To ensure that the criminal checks are completed, schools must follow this process:

Community and parent volunteers need to submit the following to the principal or designee:

• A copy of the volunteer's driver's license or state approved ID
• CCPS Volunteer Interest Form (please note:  all lines on this form must be completed, including having the form notarized. School bookkeepers may be able to assist with this process.)
1. Parents who have concerns about confidentiality should be encouraged to place the Criminal Background Check form in a sealed envelope.  All information on this form is sensitive and must be maintained in a confidential manner. Schools should contact the Office Safety and Security / C.C.S.P. (770) 473-2700 to confirm whether a check has been done.  The Volunteer Interest form is for school office staff and the Office of School Safety to use to contact and place volunteers. 
    
2. Send all envelopes (unopened) to the attention of the Department of Safety and Security / C.C.S.P. 1058 Fifth Avenue, Jonesboro, Georgia  30236 or they may be sent or taken directly to the Clayton County School Police, schools do NOT keep a copy of this form. 
    
3. Applicants may deliver the forms for criminal history background checks to be conducted Monday - Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm at the Clayton County School Police Department located at 1058 Fifth Ave., Jonesboro, Georgia  30236.
    
4. The Office of Safety and Security / C.C.S.P. will alert the school when a volunteer is cleared.  The Criminal Background Check form will then be stored in a confidential manner at the Clayton County Publics Schools District Office.
    
5. The Office of Safety and Security / C.C.S.P. will inform the principal of any individual whose criminal records check or Criminal Background Check form contains questionable information.  The Office of Safety and Security / C.C.S.P. will determine whether the offense relates directly to the capability or suitability of the volunteer to work in the school.  The Office of School Safety will consult with officials from the Clayton County School Police, as needed, in making this decision.
    

An individual who disagrees with any decisions regarding their status as a volunteer that results from the criminal background check may appeal that decision to Clarence E Cox, III, Director of Safety and Security.
