I am going into my 14th year of teaching at Adamson Middle School; I am Certified and Highly Qualified in Middle School Science and Middle School Social Studies.  I received my Bachelors Degree from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where I was a member of the Dean's list, President of the History Club, and Mr. Stillman of my senior class. I obtained my Masters Degree from Capella University. I am currently in the process of completing my EDD in the areas of Curriculum and Instruction, and has received  a Post Masters Certificate in Leadership and Accountability as well as a Post Masters Certificate in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University. I enjoy family, and sports.




After school assistance will be Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. with prior arrangements discussed with Mr. Crowell.

Welcome to sixth grade Earth Science!  I have been looking forward to meeting you all summer. This year will be different than past years; because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we will began the year totally virtual. In class this year, you can expect to work hard, learn actively, and accomplish a lot.   In order for us to accomplish these goals, there are some procedures we must all practice and learn for class to run smoothly. All students are expected to log into Google Classroom daily for instructions, all instructional material, and will be required to complete assignments on time as well as transmitting all assignments when due via Google Classroom.

Course Name: 6th Grade Earth Science

Special Materials: Composition notebook, paper, pens (blue or black), pencils, ruler, colored pencils, markers, double sided tape, highlight, 5 subject spiral notebook and calculator

Course Description/Learning Targets: 

The middle school earth science course is designed to give all students an overview of common strands in earth science, as well as, connect reading, language arts, and math standards.  Students will acquire understanding of scientific concepts and process skills by using a hands-on, student-centered approach. Students will achieve an enduring understanding of the following concepts:  meteorology, astronomy, geology, oceanography, natural resources, and the human impact on the planet as it relates to sixth grade earth science.  

 

By completion of the coursework for sixth grade earth science students will master the Georgia Performance Standards for earth science content and the nature of science.  Students will: record, organize and interpret data, graphs, tables, chart interactions accurately, use proper units and analyze scientific data via calculation, observation and inference, recognize the importance of explaining data with precision and accuracy, apply safety techniques in labs, and use advanced technology in these applications.

 

 

SCIENCE INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK:

 

 All science students will be required to keep an interactive notebook within the classroom.  This will be where you keep all of your lab write ups and a log of daily class activities.   The notebook table of contents will be updated and posted in the classroom.  There will be periodic notebook checks. If you lose your notebook, you will be expected to replace it along with all handouts, etc.  Your notebook should be kept organized and neat at all times.

 

 

SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT: We will have a class Science Fair in which all students are required to participate.  Students should begin thinking of ideas for Science Fair projects immediately. We will learn how to complete each phase of the project in class, but the project should be completed independently at home. All Science Fair projects must be approved by the teacher.  The project will count toward 15% of  the student’s grade.  Top class projects will be selected to move on to the school Science Fair. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Assignments: Students will be required to complete all assignments and turn them in on the due date. Homework is assigned on a nightly basis Monday – Friday. The students will also be assigned a variety of performance tasks. These will assess the students’ knowledge during and after completion of a unit. Students will be assigned independent projects to be completed over a specified time.  Students will be assessed on their progress on the Georgia Standards of Excellence through skills and benchmark tests.

Special Assignments and Projects:

There will be several special assignments given throughout the year. Science Fair is due mid- November, preparation outside of the classroom is expected. Access to a computer and the Internet will be an advantage.

Classroom rules and Discipline Procedures: Students will be expected to follow all school rules and school discipline policies outlined in the student handbook. In addition the following rules will apply in the classroom:

1. Be prepared…your materials and your attitude.

2. Be prompt…to class and with your work.

3. Be respectful…of others, yourself, property and of time.

4. Be honest…copying others’ work does not help you learn.

Makeup Policy:  Students will be allowed to make up missed work.  Students will have two days from the date of the missed absence to complete and turn in missed work to teacher. Missed lab experiments will be made up under the teacher’s supervision. The teacher reserves the right to substitute or modify assignments missed by students.
